The impact of network disruptions on critical infrastructure cannot be overstated, particularly in the public safety sector. Recent industry research from Splunk reveals that downtime costs Global 2000 companies approximately $400 billion annually, highlighting the massive financial impact when critical systems fail. These aren’t just abstract statistics—for emergency services and first responders, network failures directly impact response times and can put lives at risk. When dispatch systems experience outages or communication networks go down, the consequences affect real people during real emergencies. The report reveals that lost revenue is the largest direct cost at $49 million annually, and it can take organizations up to 75 days to recover that revenue following a major disruption.
For those of us in public safety, the costs transcend financial considerations—response times, situational awareness, and ultimately, human lives may be affected by connectivity failures.
