Broadcasting in a 5G world: What you need to know

The exponential growth of video over IP is changing broadcasting needs and workflows. What’s more, the growing consumption of high-quality video through both traditional and new media is driving 5G to the forefront of industry discussions and projects.

Heralded as the future of connectivity, 5G technology is poised to transform the role telecommunications plays in our world today. It will enable broadcasters to confidently deliver more content from more locations, transforming remote broadcast workflows with more options for higher resolutions, more sophisticated productions, and more location flexibility.

This is an exciting future we can prepare for today. Here are three things you need to know about 5G.

1. Network diversity still matters.

Network diversity is key for the demanding nature of live news and sports coverage. While 5G promises to deliver new capabilities, it alone doesn’t fully address problems broadcasters face, like unreliable mobile networks, poor connectivity in remote locations, or variable latencies across individual networks.

Having only one connection path leaves you vulnerable to insufficient bandwidth to carry out critical tasks or, in the worst case, downtime. Unlike traditional failover or link aggregation solutions, Dejero’s Smart Blending Technology simultaneously blends IP connections from multiple providers to form a virtual ‘network of networks,’ intelligently managing individual connections’ fluctuations, packet loss, and latency differences in real-time. The result is enhanced network reliability, expanded coverage, and greater bandwidth.

5G will be a new ingredient to be aggregated with other IP connections available to deliver the reliable bandwidth you need when operating remotely. The real technology advantage comes from getting the most from each available connection, whether in a 5G environment or an LTE one.

2. RF and antenna design will make a difference.

Adding a 5G modem into the mix is not enough to take advantage of all 5G offers. The right components also need to be there to reap the benefits fully and get the most from each available connection.

It takes more than just 5G to fuel your enhanced performance

Imagine 5G as the premium gas for your car— in theory, it sounds fantastic. But if your vehicle is old, or you haven’t prepared the engine for it, it won’t enhance the performance.

It’s not just the fuel (or the 5G); it’s all the components that make the difference.

Dejero’s 5G mobile transmission solutions, the EnGo 3 and EnGo 3x, take the best of its high-performing Smart Blending Technology and combine that with a best-in-class antenna design.

We’ve completely redesigned the RF and antenna architecture to maximize the power of 5G. With four antennas per modem, they offer greater reliability, especially in areas where the cellular signal strength is weak. We’ve also ensured optimal spacing of the antennas to avoid interference and add an additional boost of reliability.

Our latest generation of 5G modems can support additional bands used by carriers in the US, Canada, Australia, China, Korea, and Latin America that other mobile transmitters can’t connect to, so you can use them virtually anywhere. Supporting additional international bands is essential when using them outside your home base, especially since some countries operate in specific frequencies.

This will drive the most resilient connectivity on the device, even in the most challenging conditions.

3. Existing LTE infrastructure offers the reliable connectivity you need to get more done in the field today–but 5G could make it even better.

Going live from any location, accessing newsroom systems, and sending clips and edited packages are some of the top problems that broadcast technology solutions strive to solve.

Current LTE blending solutions easily handle HD video and even 4K UHD at speeds of 60Mb/s or even 80 Mb/s. In fact, the Dejero EnGo 265 transmits high-quality live video with glass-to-glass latency as low as 0.5 seconds over bonded cellular connections. Integrated Smart Blending Technology intelligently combines multiple network connections in real-time for enhanced reliability, expanded coverage, and greater bandwidth capacity.

The built-in GateWay mode also delivers an ultra-fast, reliable internet connection, allowing teams to be more productive, no matter where they are. Adding 5G to the mix will expand on this technology, allowing for increased file transfer speed for internet connectivity solutions.
